North Plainfield Police Chief William Parenti announced that a bicyclist was struck by a motor vehicle in the K-Mart Plaza parking lot on Route 22 East directly in front of the International House of Pancakes, 1244 Route 22 east at 11:37 am, Monday, July 11.  The bicyclist, Katie Miller, 57 years of age, of Malcolm Avenue, North Plainfield was transported by Atlantic Air One helicopter ambulance to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital for traumatic injuries.      

The operator of the motor vehicle, Gilbert Federbush, 68 years of age, of Twin Falls Road in Berkley Heights, New Jersey, was operating a 2001 Izuzu Rodeo.  The accident is being investigated by the North Plainfield Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team.  The accident investigation is active and ongoing and any witnesses are urged to contact the North Plainfield Police Department at 908-769-2937 or the Somerset County prosecutor’s Office Tip Line at 1-888-577-8477.  No one has been charged with any motor vehicle violations at this time.      

Initially the bicyclist was pinned under the motor vehicle and between the time of the first 911 call and the arrival of police, approximately ten Good Samaritans exited the International House of Pancakes and were able to move the vehicle off the bicyclist.  Also responding to assist at the scene were the North Plainfield Fire Department and Mercy Six paramedics from JFK Hospital.  Chief Parenti added the bicyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.
