Senior Centers offer Cool Respite on Hot Summer Days

Heat has been referred to as a “silent killer.”  The National Weather Service statistical data indicates that heat can cause more fatalities per year than floods, lightning, tornadoes and hurricanes combined. Today it is anticipated that temperatures and heat indexes will climb to the upper 90’s, and possibly even reach 100 degrees or higher.

The Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders encourages people to take care of themselves on hot summer days and to seek a minimum of two hours of air conditioning during periods of extreme heat.  It is also recommended that people avoid exertion, take a cool shower or bath and drink water regularly to stay hydrated.

People age 60 and above are invited to enjoy the seven air-conditioned facilities operated by the county Office on Aging and Disability Services.  Open Monday through Friday, the senior centers offer a cool respite and a variety of educational, recreational and entertaining activities, including wellness programs and health screenings.   Transportation can be arranged if needed.

If you wish to have lunch, please contact the center one business day in advance to make a reservation.  A suggested lunch donation of $1.50 is recommended for individuals age 60 and above.  The cost of lunch for those under 60 years of age is $5.35.
