Applicants Sought for Leadership Somerset Program

Application deadline is Sept. 14

Adults who live or work in Somerset County are invited to apply for the Leadership Somerset Class of 2013. The goal of the program is to expand participants’ knowledge of issues and challenges facing Somerset County and to develop an active network of community leaders.  The application deadline for the program is Friday, Sept. 14.

“Graduates of the program gain a greater awareness of available resources in Somerset County and have access to a network of over 300 Leadership Somerset fellows,” said Freeholder Director Patricia Walsh, co-liaison of the program. “Many of our graduates are able to make a greater impact in their communities and local nonprofit organizations after completing the program.”

“We encourage individuals who are interested in becoming leadership resources for their communities to apply,” said Deputy Director Peter S. Palmer, co-liaison of the Leadership Somerset program.   “Class members enhance their leadership skills by learning about county resources, participating in class projects and networking with community leaders.”

Sessions are held once a month, on a week day, from January through November.  Classes start at about 8 a.m. and end by 5 p.m.

The majority of the cost to attend the 11-month program is underwritten by the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders.  Leadership Somerset participants are asked to contribute a program fee of $250 for the year, which includes participation in all sessions and meals.  Limited scholarships based on financial need are available.  A diverse group of applicants will be selected by October to begin the program in January.

Established in 2000, Leadership Somerset focuses on a variety of program topics, including Government, Economy, Community Development, Justice, Public Safety, Human Services, Arts and History, Community Health, Environment, Diversity and Lifelong Learning.

Leadership Somerset is sponsored by Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders, Somerset County Business Partnership, Raritan Valley Community College and the Somerset County United Way of Northern New Jersey.
