Recycling Tours Scheduled to Celebrate Earth Day, County Government Month

Registration deadline is April 16

BRIDGEWATER - The Somerset County Recycling Center , located at 40 Polhemus Lane , will hold an open house in celebration of Earth Day and National County Government Month on Thursday, April 19, and Friday, April 20.

The public is invited to register and attend a 40-minute guided tour of the Recycling Center at 9:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. on either day.   Call Recycling Coordinator Melissa Harvey at (908) 231-7109 by Monday, April 16, to register for a tour.

As part of the tour, residents will observe the recycling process as materials and paper are dropped off by curbside trucks and then sorted and processed on conveyer belts.

Also an interactive discussion will be held on the merits of "closing the solid waste loop" by recycling, reducing, reusing and participating in backyard composting.

Somerset County handled close to 29,000 tons of recyclables through curbside pickup from more than 122,000 county households last year, thereby diverting waste from landfills.

Upon request, the recycling coordinator will visit schools to conduct presentations. School presentations will not be scheduled on April 19 and 20.

For more information about scheduling tours or school visits, contact Recycling Coordinator Melissa Harvey, Somerset County Division of Solid Waste Management, at (908) 231-7109 or harvey@co.somerset.nj.us.
