The senior centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services have announced the fall program schedule.  All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed. Please call for lunch reservations by 10 a.m. the day before you wish to come. For more information, contact the appropriate centers.

November 1 – Somerset County Senior Expo Open House, 10:00-1:00 pm (Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services will be hosting this event to provide county residents the opportunity to learn more about its programs and services and those of various agencies.  Lunch reservations are required by October 21st.)

November 6 – “What is Diwali?” 10:30 am (Diwali of “Festival of Lights” is an official holiday in India.  Learn about the customs and afterward enjoy an Indian based menu for lunch.)

November 12 – “What is Unclaimed Property?” by Linda Henderson, State of New Jersey, 10:30 am (Linda will be here to discuss how to find out if there is missing money with your name on it.)

November 14 – “New Jersey’s Hidden Treasures in Plain View” by Joe Mish, Local Nature Columnist and Photographer, 10:30 am (Besides photos and stories about New Jersey’s interesting animals and landmarks, local nature columnist and photographer, Joe Mish will share photos taken as he cared for a variety of exotic animals when he was a veterinary assistant at Warner’s Brothers’ Jungle Habitat.)

November 19 – National Memory Screening Day with the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills, 10:30 am (The Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills will conduct individual cognitive memory screenings and will discuss Alzheimer’s Disease symptoms and treatments.)

November 22Free Vision Screenings with Kessler Rehabilitation Center, 10:00-12:30 pm (Representatives from Kessler Rehabilitation Center will be here to conduct individualized vision screenings on a first come, first served basis.)

November 26 – The Total Brain Workout: Crosswords & Trivia, 10:30 am (This is the 8th session in the interactive brain exercise series.  Crosswords and trivia games are fun but they are really all about bringing together bits and pieces of knowledge into framework.  Exercising the brain is the name of the game so bring your thinking caps!)

November 4 – Diwali Fun, 10:30 am (Diwali is the biggest and the brightest of all Hindu festivals.  It’s the festival of lights that’s marked by four days of celebration and symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and wisdom over ignorance.  A tradition associated with this holiday is dice and card game playing.  A popular saying is that if you play card and dice games during Diwali, you will have prosperity through the coming year.  Join us as we learn about this fun festival, sample some Asian Indian snacks and play some card games.)

November 18 – “Photography Tips For Taking Holiday “Expert” Pictures” – Lunch & Learn Opportunity with Ghanshyam Patel, 11:45 am (Award winning photographer, Ghanshyam Patel, will share his knowledge and expertise on how to take the best pictures possible using a basic camera.  He will offer suggestions when taking a group family picture, individual photos and outdoor scenic pictures.  Learn how to recognize the best lighting and photo composition to make your holiday pictures a vivid memory.  This is a hands-on workshop so attendees are asked to bring their own camera.  Advanced reservations are required by Thursday, Nov. 14.)

November 25 – “POLST (Practitioner Orders For End Of Life Care)” by Michele Cameron, RN, BSN, MA, Manager of Community Outreach for Atlantic Home Care and Hospice, 10:30 am (POLST provides a new, easier and more applicable form to communicate end-of-life decisions.  This program will highlight the following learning objectives: will describe the purpose of a POLST form, identifies appropriate patients for POLST, will demonstrate communication skills helpful in end-of-life discussions and more importantly, will articulate how POLST travels through all care settings, something that other forms do not provide.
