The senior centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services have announced the August program schedule.  All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed. Please call for lunch reservations by 10 a.m. the day before you wish to come. For more information, contact the appropriate centers.

August 6 – “Summer Vacations Right Here in New Jersey” by Helen Vasko, 10:30 am (Helen Vasko visits to discuss all of the treasures in our very own state and vacations that we have enjoyed in New Jersey throughout the years. Did you go to the famous Jersey Shore?  Maybe you tried your luck in Atlantic City or fished at the Delaware Water Gap!  Photos welcome!)

August 7 – Craft: Painting Sea Shells for Decorative Shell Lights, 10:30 am (Express your creative talents by painting and decorating various types of shells which will then be glued to string lights to decorate the center.)

August 7 – State Health Insurance Program (SHIP), 10:00 am. By appointment only. A counselor will be available to provide free help to New Jersey beneficiaries, who have problems with, or questions about, their health insurance.  SHIP is a statewide program sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.

August 13 – “Diabetes & Arthritis: Knowing the Facts” by the National Diabetic Association, 10:30 am (The National Diabetic Association will be here to discuss diabetes care and arthritis management as well as the connection between the two.  All attendees will receive a pair of diabetic socks.)

August 14 – “Sugar Addiction: What are the Signs?” by Michelle VanEyck, Somerset Treatment Services, 10:30 am (Michelle will discuss the reasons why our bodies become addicted to sugar and the detrimental side effects as a result.  She will also speak about the various ways to eliminate sugar cravings for better health.)

August 14 – “Starting Your Family’s History” – Lunch & Learn Opportunity, by Catherine Zahn, Past Trustee, Genealogical Society of New Jersey, 12:00-2:00 pm (Catherine “Casey” Zahn is a past trustee of the Genealogical Society of New Jersey and was the 2008 program chair for the FGS Conference in Philadelphia.  From family information to family pictures, this class will show you how to get organized and start researching your family tree.  The program is $10.00 per person.  Reservations must be received by August 12th.)

August 16 – “Cooking Demonstration: Summer Pasta Salad” by Kaitlyn McGowan, RD, 10:30 am (Kaitlyn will be delighting us with a demonstration on how to prepare an easy and delicious summer pasta salad.  She will also suggest easy recipes that are perfect for light summer meals.  Tastings are included!)

August 20 – “The Life & Music of Irving Berlin” by Dan Colodner, 10:30 am (Dan Colodner returns to entertain and educate us on Irving Berlin’s life and music.  He will play various songs on the piano while discussing Berlin’s biography and music career.)

August 28 – Healthy Food Tasting: Watermelon Cucumber Cooler, 10:45 am (You will enjoy this cool, refreshing drink on a hot summer day!  Try a spin on old favorites by combining cucumber with watermelon along with a few natural ingredients.  The result is delicious!)

August 30 – The Total Brain Workout:  Outside the Box Thinking, 10:30 am (This is the 5th session in our new series of interactive brain exercises.  Lateral thinking refers to the use of one’s thought processes through a non-traditional way or “thinking outside the box” as the expression goes.  This chapter will present you with puzzles that will challenge your logical thought processes and will force you to use the right hemisphere of your brain for alternate solutions.)

Learn about the nutritional value of yogurt and the differences between regular and Greek yogurt.  Read the labels to compare between the two and make your choice.  Greek yogurt has earned its way into the supermarkets and more people are choosing Greek instead of regular - learn why.

The internet is a wonderful invention but it could also have its downsides.  Learn about internet scams, spam and viruses, how to safely surf the internet and how to protect your grandchildren from the internet’s downsides.  This presentation is an overall summary of internet safety for the senior population.

August 12 – “A Touch of Sinatra,” 10:30 am (This performance focuses on the life and music of Frank Sinatra, one of the most popular singers of the 20th century starring Donny Farraro, one of the most authentic Sinatra singers in the music industry today.  He will be singing some of Sinatra’s greatest songs such as: New York, New York, Summer Wind and Witchcraft.)

August 16 – “Ancient Greece” by Emily Embler, Outreach Educator, Morris Museum, 10:30 am (Explore Ancient Greek life through examination of common everyday objects such as plates, cups, bowls and lamps.  Listen to stories of the gods they worshipped and view their images in visually artistic and utilitarian works of art.)

August 19 – Movie: “Les Miserables,” 10:00 am (In 9th century France, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert (Russell Crow) after he breaks parole, agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Anne Hathaway) daughter, Cosette (Amanda Seyfried).  The fateful decision changes their lives forever.)

August 26 – “Fall Prevention” by Cynthia Kusorgbor, MPH, CHES, Health Educator, Somerset County Department of Health, 10:30 am (Did you know that most falls are preventable?  In preparation for September’s National Fall Prevention Awareness Week attend this program and learn how to reduce your risk of falling.)

August 30 – You and Perception, 10:30 am (Perception is the process of acquiring information.  Through the sensory register (sight, smell, hearing, touch, taste) and converting it into a usable mental form.  Join us as we do some word games to strengthen our perception skills.
