It’s important to get a flu vaccine every year to protect against viruses that research suggests are most likely to circulate each season. Flu viruses are constantly changing; therefore, vaccines may be updated from one season to the next to protect against viruses that may be most common during the upcoming flu season.  Also, for optimal protection, annual vaccination is recommended because immunity from the vaccine declines over time.

The flu is a contagious disease that affects the lungs and can lead to serious illness, including pneumonia. Even healthy people can get sick enough to miss work or school for a significant period of time, or be hospitalized.

The flu vaccine is recommended for most people 6 months of age and older. Pregnant women, young children, older people, and people with certain chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease are at increased risk of serious flu-related complications.  For this population, getting a yearly flu vaccine is especially important.

The flu vaccine cannot cause you to get the flu.
