Somerset County Senior Centers Announce April Program Schedule

The senior centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services have announced the April program schedule.  All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed. Please call for lunch reservations by 10 a.m. the day before you wish to come. For more information, contact the appropriate centers.

April 2 – “Fruit to Nuts: Healthy Nuts & Unusual Fruits” by Cheryl Komline, RD, Bernards Township Board of Health, 10:30 a.m. (Cheryl will discuss all the unusual, nutrient-rich fruits available at your local market as well as the healthiest variety of nuts.)

April 3 – “How to Prep and Stage Your Home to Sell” – Lunch & Learn Opportunity, 12:00-2:00 p.m. Mike Downer of Coldwell Banker (named 2013 Realtor of the Year by Hunterdon Somerset Association of REALTORS) will discuss the specifics of getting your home ready to show and sell. This program is $5.00 per person.  Reservations and lunch selection deadline is April 1.

April 4 – “Driving Into Your Golden Years” by the Kessler Rehabilitation Center, 10:30 a.m. (A representative from Kessler Rehabilitation will speak about all the ways to keep yourself safe on the roads).

April 8 – “Rhythm of Fun Drumming Circle” at 10:30 a.m. with Yahaya Kamate, New Jersey Arts Horizons. Explore the various health benefits of drumming such as increased energy, improved immunity and a chance to connect with friends.  No music or drumming experience necessary.

April 9 – “Dealing with Depression” by Gabby Santara, Somerset Treatment Services, 10:30 a.m. (A representative from Somerset Treatment Services will discuss how to handle bouts of depression and where to seek help for yourself or loved ones.)

April 11 – Easter Egg Dip & Design Workshop, 10:30 a.m. Registration deadline is April 8. Every year, we enjoy designing unique Easter eggs to take home.  Supplies provided.

April 15 – “Preventing Back Injuries” by the Kessler Rehabilitation Center, 10:30 a.m. Presentation will review effective techniques to try when engaging in daily chores to keep your back safe from injury.

April 16 – Spring Floral Arranging Workshop, 10:30 a.m. (Members of the Bernardsville Garden Club will conduct an informative and interactive flower arranging workshop.  All participants take home a lovely, live flower basket.  Seating is limited and reservations are required.)

April 18 – Holiday – Center Closed

April 22 – “Osteoporosis Prevention” by Morristown Memorial Hospital, 10:30 a.m. (A nurse from Morristown Memorial Hospital will speak about the best ways to go about preventing osteoporosis.)

April 23 – Prostate and Ovarian Cancer Education & Paper Screenings with Somerset Medical Center, 10:30 a.m. This important program helps to raise awareness about prostate and ovarian cancer.  Somerset Medical Center will administer pen and paper screenings to help determine risk factors.

April 23 – Bingo (Try your luck today for some great prizes!)

April 25 – Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony, 10:30 a.m. (Today we say thank you and honor those people in our community who graciously volunteer their time at the Senior Wellness Center.  We couldn’t do it without them!)

April 29 – “Fraud Alert: Sweepstakes & Foreign Lottery Schemes” by the United States Postal Inspection Service, 10:30 a.m. (A United States Postal Inspection Federal agent will visit to discuss the specifics of sweepstakes and lottery fraud.  The occurrence of this has risen sharply over the past few years in this country and the best defense is knowledge!)

April 30 – “Seeds for Health” by Kaitlyn McGowan, RD, 10:30 a.m. Kaitlyn McGowan returns with some exciting news about the health benefits of seeds.  She will bring a few varieties to sample.

Tai chi incorporates simple martial arts movements performed slowly to build strength, flexibility and fitness.  Lunch begins at 11:45 a.m., and the program will start at 12:45 p.m.  This is the second of four “Boomer-errific” movement programs. 

April 3 – “Reiki” – Lunch & Learn Opportunity with Suzanne O’Brien, Reiki Leader, 11:45 a.m. Registration deadlines is Monday, March 31. (Reiki is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.  An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during Reiki classes.  Lunch begins at 11:45 a.m. and the program starts at 12:45 p.m.  This is the third of four “Boomer-errific” well-being, movement programs.

April 4 & 25 – Brains and Games with Adrienne/Hand Bell Practice, 10:30 a.m.

April 7 – “Wordles” with Warren Township E2 Students, 10:30 a.m. Students from Warren Township’s Enriched Education class will be at the center to create a “Wordle” for each attendee.  A “Wordle” is a “word cloud” that will be created from answers to questions that the students will ask.  Using different fonts, layouts, and color schemes, the one-word answers will be artfully arranged to create a personalized Wordle.  (The students will return with the completed Wordles at another time.)

April 9 – Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, 10:30 a.m. Volunteers are exceptional people whose commitment, skills and positive energy make great things happen at the Warrenbrook Senior Center.  We have over 25 volunteers that help prepare food and implement activities.  This is an opportunity to thank them for their dedicated service and the difference they make in our lives.

April 10 – “Living Well Program” – Lunch & Learn Opportunity with Jo Mahal, YogaFit Certification in Level One Seniors Instructor, 11:45 a.m. The registration deadline is Monday, April 7. All levels of fitness are welcome.  This interactive yoga class is designed to improve the health, performance and mental acuity of individuals interested in improving their level of fitness.  The program blends the fitness format of balance, strength and flexibility.  Lunch begins at 11:45 and the program begins at 12:45.  (This is the last of four “Boomer-errific” well-being, movement programs.)

April 16 – “Unused Medication Drop-Off Opportunity” with Officer Thomas Wallace, Somerset County Sheriff’s Department, 9:30-10:30 a.m. (Officer Wallace will be at the center to collect any unused or expired medications.  Please take advantage of this safe way to dispose of your medications.  Center staff cannot accept unused medication without the Sheriff’s Officer being present.)

April 28 – Art Exhibition Opening Day, 10:30 a.m. Join us as we acknowledge the talent and skills of our watercolor and oil paint students, who will be displaying their artwork at this Ageless Art Show.  Light refreshments will be served on opening day at 10:30 a.m.  The Art Exhibition will be open to the public 10:30 a.m. to 1p.m. from Monday, April 28, to Thursday, May 1.
